Open Roles

The production team is looking to cast at least one actor in each role. The production team is considering several casting options, including multiple casts splitting the eight performances. All roles are unpaid.

  • Jamie Wellerstein

    • Male, Ages 25-35, tenor/pop/theater. Jamie is a talented, charming, and rising novelist. He's ambitious and enthusiastic and is experiencing growing success in his career. His story progresses chronologically from the joy of new love to the challenges of success and temptation and the eventual breakdown of his marriage. Jamie's part is written for a tenor. His vocal range in the musical extends from A2 (A below middle C) to Bb4. Jamie's songs demand an excellent upper range, combining lyrical and powerful moments.

  • Cathy Hiatt

    • Female, Ages 25-35, mezzo-soprano/pop/theater. Cathy is a struggling actress, characterized by her emotional depth and vulnerability. She faces career disappointments and personal struggles in the relationship. Her story is told in reverse chronological order, beginning at the end of her marriage. She deals with professional rejections, the complexities of love, and the challenges of being in a relationship with a rising star. Cathy's part is written for a mezzo-soprano. Her vocal range typically extends from about G3 (G below middle C) to D5 or Eb5. The character's songs require a strong mix/belt voice as they often sit in the middle of the Mezzo range with occasional higher belts.

Plot

An emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years, the show's unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story backward while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.

Rehearsal Information

Rehearsals will begin the week of November 10th. Rehearsals will likely take place Sunday-Thursday 6:30-9:30 pm; however, given the nature of the show, the schedule will likely reflect the availability of its small cast and live pit. Tech week will begin on January 5th. Rehearsals will only occur from December 22 to January 1 if strictly necessary.

Performance Information:

The Last Five Years will open Thursday, January 9th, and run for two weekends (January 9-12 & January 16-19).

What To Prepare:

First, sign up for an audition slot and complete the online audition form. Resumes and headshots may be attached to the online audition form. If available, acting resumes will also be accepted at auditions.

Please prepare TWO SONGS (32 bar cuts) - one from the Last Five Years' score and one in the style of the show/character that interests you (Cathy or Jamie). The second selection should be a song from a contemporary musical that is NOT part of the JRB canon. Songs should allow the team to see how you would characterize Cathy or Jamie at their highest and their lowest (pick one song from the show that is either high or low, and your non-TLFY selection should be the opposite).

Auditionees must also prepare the sides linked HERE.

For those auditioning, it's essential to recognize that this production values not just vocal prowess but also the ability to embody endearing, genuine characters capable of conveying a story musically. The characters' ability to resonate with the audience as a couple and as individuals is crucial for the show's emotional impact. That being said, both roles are highly vocally demanding and require much vocal stamina.
